Street Portraits

I began shooting street portraits in Los Angeles several years ago as a fun learning exercise. The more I shot, the more I realized that I love photographing people and tapping into the alchemy between myself, the subject, and the camera. I am always amazed that for a brief moment, I get to create art with strangers.

My process

I love to explore vibrant Los Angeles neighborhoods and events: colorful parades, tattoo conventions, lowrider car shows, etc—either alone or alongside a street photography collective I'm part of. When someone fascinating catches my eye, I strike up a quick conversation and if they’re open to it, we shoot. Most people say yes and we spend about 3 minutes shooting before they continue on their way. Afterward, I send them the photos, and if they’re interested, we plan a follow-up photo session where we collaborate on a creative vision. This artistic collaboration with a stranger is what I find most exciting- I am always surprised at the results that I could never have planned or anticipated. Plus my camera gives me an opportunity to engage with people that I wouldn't have met otherwise! These experiences make my life richer and fuller.
